Being alive in the 21st century means we can have access to unprecedented knowledge of our bodies through technology. But we then must walk that fine line between being obsessed with metrics on our phones and watches, and actually harnessing all this knowledge to maximise our wellbeing.
At Elixir, we know full well that a healthy diet, physical exercise, and a good night’s sleep are the trifecta of longevity. However, we are increasingly disrupted from meeting such biological demands in our contemporary lifestyle: our food is poor in nutrients, we struggle to maintain a steady flow of physical work out, and our phones and screens disturb our sleeping patterns. That’s without even talking about the effects of stress so familiar to most of us…
In order to offset the price we pay for our sophisticated lifestyles, smart rings can guide us in our relationship with our bodies: when should we eat, meditate; what are our stress triggers; and how we can use this knowledge to achieve better results.
Even though our phones or watches can track much of our bio systems, the newly launched smart rings are a level above. Unlike phones or watches, rings are comfortable to wear whilst still looking sleek and stylish. Another key aspect is their wearability. You can swim, dance, jump, run, no matter how much you sweat, the device stays put. It’s comfortable enough to sleep with it; you can even take it to the sauna to measure its effect on your body! It will also tell you know how much your heart enjoys those passionate nights of romantic engagement…
However, we must also appreciate we are adding an electronically powered device to our bodies 24/7. There is a growing amount of evidence that our constant proximity to electricity may not always have a positive effect on us (as in the case of sleep, for instances). It is also important to note that even though we are all the same, one size doesn’t fit all. Whilst some of us can navigate an electrically charged environment without disruptions, some may feel a negative effect as a result.
One of the benefits of wearing a comfortable device such as a smart ring is that it can motivate us to achieve better results. When we track our achievements, we are rewarded, and such sense of accomplishment works wonders in our brain’s neuroplasticity and aptitude to go the infamous ‘extra mile’.
The consensus when we speak of biotrackers is that we need to make the data work for us. Just capturing our biometrics doesn’t really give us any insights. In this respect, we at Elixir like to recommend our darling Andrew Huberman’s podcast. In his endless generosity, Huberman is always sharing key tips and advices on how to use such data to get younger every day. After all, tim is of the essence.
